Mounting Control Surfaces: 4.5 hrs

May 7, 2020

The QB wings and fuselage will be arriving soon and we really want to get the empennage finished and out of the way before that. The second-to-last step is to mount the elevators and rudder to the stabilizers and make sure everything can swing through its full range of motion. Since we finished stabilizers back in March they’ve been chilling up in the rafters, so we dug out the ladder and pulled them down.

Each control surface is held on with three rod ends set to varying lengths. Upon mounting the elevators we noticed there’s a bit if skin that prevents them from swinging and needs to be removed.

With the rod ends set and the skin cut away everything swings freely and oh so lightly. It’s the smoothness of movement and lightness of pressure to move the counter-balanced elevators is really impressive. I can’t wait to fly them. It’s also really exciting to see the horizontal and vertical tails looking like parts that are ready to attach to an airplane.

Since it’s easier to store all the parts individually, sadly we dis-assmebled everything and put it up in the rafters with the exception of the left elevator, which still needs a trim tab.

Cheers,
Kacy
