Somewhat late start this morning, heading out of camp around 9 am. Being right next to the water was convenient and a lot of fun. We spent some time cooling off and I was able to soak my feet.
There was an option to pick up the VA Creeper Trail for a bit, which would have shaved off a few miles and a lot of elevation. Nobody in our group took it, but a lot of other folks did.
The trail followed the river for a few miles and we had a great lunch at a gravel road crossing. After lunch the trail climbed into the highlands and we met some cows. It was a hot day, easily over 80 deg, and it took its toll. I drank over 6 liters of water and needed it all. Caboose didn’t up his water intake and collapsed 2 miles from camp from cramps and started vomiting. Some hikers stopped to help him out, they got him to keep down some water but this is a reminder that heat exhaustion is not a joke.
The overnight temps are starting to be warm enough that I sweat all night under the quilt. It’s too cold to use just the liner yet, so I’m just living with a stinky sleeping bag. Tomorrow should be great, we’ll be passing through the Grayson Highlands where there is a herd of super friendly ponies. Everyone is excited and overall the mood is good.
