We’ve finished a section of the trail referred to as “The Balds”, it’s been my favorite part so far – the views have been phenomenal. We stopped for lunch at the top of Hump Mountain, Peanut did a victory dance (check out this week’s video).
My left foot hurt way more than I expected based on how good it felt yesterday. Today’s 9 miles down to the road was rough. It felt like far too long of a day when we finally came upon U.S. 19E and caught a ride into Roan Mountain, TN. Peanut bought us all visors, they’re the highest of fashion and they’ll be all the rage on the trail.
“The Station” is a fantastic hostel with a tap room on the lower floor. I spent too much money, but we had a great night and the hostel even put on Game of Thrones (Season 8 Episode 2) for us. We’d watched episode 1 in the Erwin sick-room last week so I’m surprisingly caught up for a season I expected to completely miss.
The laundry didn’t really get clean, I’m starting to think the clothes will be a lost cause by the end. However, the beers were delicious and the hot shower was amazing so it’s time to settle in and head to bed. Tomorrow should be a 15-ish mile day, which is starting to feel routine.
As of today I’m officially out of North Carolina, so that’s one more state behind me. I have 5 days of food to make it to Damascus and just being able to say that shocks me a little. Damascus is a big milestone for the trail, home of trail days and all, and I didn’t really believe that I’d make it this far. I’m still not convinced I’ll make it all the way, but I’m glad that I’m fit and able to keep going.
